Origin
On the Lake Kivu escarpment in Rwanda’s Western Province, steep volcanic slopes and cool nights slow cherry maturation. Farms sit at above 1,900 meters, and trees are largely Bourbon lineage adapted to elevation and cloud cover. The terrain is broken into small family plots, each contributing to a regional profile prized for clarity.
People & Process
Smallholders deliver ripe cherries to cooperative washing stations where they’re depulped, fermented, washed, and dried on raised beds. Peaberries—single, round seeds that form in a small share of cherries—are screened off for uniform density and clean extraction. The result is a precise, high‑clarity washed expression.
In the Cup (City+)
City+ highlights a tea‑like frame and steady sweetness: rooibos and chamomile on the nose; apricot‑tea brightness and orange zest through the middle; cocoa and gentle clove on the finish. Balanced, crisp, and easy to dial.
Impact
Coffee is a rural backbone here. Roughly 400,000 smallholders rely on it, and in recent seasons it has contributed about 13% of agricultural export earnings. The country accounts for well under 1% of global output and typically sits in the low‑20s among exporters—modest volume, outsized craft.
Brew Notes (City+)
Pourover 1:16 at ~94 °C; target a flat bed and 2:45–3:15 drawdown. For immersion, 15 g in 240 g for ~4:00, gentle break, then press.
