Mount Elgon isn't a sharp peak—it's an enormous expanse of successive plateaus, an extinct shield volcano split nearly in two by the Uganda-Kenya border. The mountain floats dramatically above the surrounding valley floor, and its slopes are home to dense farming communities growing some of the best organic coffee in Africa.
The Sipi Falls region, named after the mountain's most famous three-tiered waterfall, represents arabica's revival in Uganda. The country is Africa's second-largest coffee producer behind Ethiopia, but for decades focused on Robusta. The Sipi Falls Coffee Project, started in 1999 by UTZ, changed that trajectory by helping farmers improve quality and access specialty markets.
Today, more than 8,600 smallholder farmers—each with an average of 0.2 hectares of coffee—deliver cherry to the centralized Sipi Falls wet mill in Kapchorwa district. At elevations ranging from 1,450 to 2,200 meters, volcanic soils and high-altitude growing conditions create the foundation for balanced, approachable coffee. This isn't coffee that screams for attention. It's coffee that rewards daily drinking.
The CraftFully Washed, Sustainably Processed
The vast majority of Sipi Falls coffee is fully washed—a processing choice that prioritizes clarity and consistency. Farmers hand-pick ripe cherries and deliver them to the central mill, where they're pulped to remove fruit. After fermentation breaks down remaining mucilage, beans are washed in clean water and moved to drying.
What sets Sipi Falls apart is sustainability. The mill was built with volcanic stone wastewater management, water recycling systems, and low-energy machinery. The mechanical driers that finish the sun-dried coffee? Fueled by dried coffee husks—a closed-loop system that turns waste into energy.
The result of this care is coffee that's clean, balanced, and reliably good. Cherry fruit notes mix with chocolate warmth, caramel sweetness provides depth, and lemon brightness adds lift without aggression. This is the kind of coffee that becomes a daily ritual rather than a special occasion.

In the cup, cherry opens first—bright fruit that's juicy without being aggressive. Chocolate follows quickly, grounding the brightness with semi-sweet warmth. Caramel weaves through the mid-tones, adding depth and roundness that keeps this from being simple fruit-forward coffee. Lemon acidity in the finish provides structure and encourages another sip.
The medium body carries these flavors with balance—not too light, not too heavy. The mild-bright acidity sits in the sweet spot between flat and sharp. As the cup cools, look for brown sugar notes to emerge and the chocolate to deepen. This is coffee that works for people new to specialty and for seasoned coffee drinkers who want something reliable.
What makes this coffee special isn't intensity—it's integration. Nothing dominates. Fruit, chocolate, and sweetness exist in harmony, making this an excellent everyday drinker or a safe choice when serving guests with varied preferences.
Find Your FixThis coffee rewards versatility. For pour-over clarity, V60 or Chemex at 1:16 ratio highlights the cherry and lemon notes. For convenience without sacrifice, drip coffee makers deliver consistent, balanced cups. Aeropress with a medium grind and 2-minute steep brings out the chocolate and caramel. Whatever method you choose, expect approachable, crowd-pleasing coffee.
